- April 08, 2010: BARC to host a workshop on invasive species
On Saturday, May 8th, 2010 from 8:45am to 12:30 pm at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, located at the foot of MacNab Street North in Hamilton, please join BARC (Bay Area Restoration Council) for a free community event.
This year's topic is "Invasive Species in Hamilton Harbour/Burlington Bay and Beyond". Knowledgeable participants will address the science and policy issues surrounding the introduction of invasive species, both aquatic and terrestrial, as well as examine the risks posed by various species to our ecosystem.
How do invasive species impede our ability to delist Hamilton Harbour by 2015? What deleterious effects would Asian carp have on the Great Lakes water bodies if they advance through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal toward Lake Michigan? What behaviours and habits can you modify to reduce the risk of invasive species infiltration?
Examples of species to be addressed, and the vectors by which species are introduced, include: Asian carp, carp, purple loosestrife, zebra mussels, ballast water, recreational boating, pet and watergarden trades.
The stellar panel includes:
- Lindsay Chadderton, Aquatic Invasive Species Director, The Nature Conservancy's Great Lakes Project, Chicago, and Professor, Biology Department, University of Notre Dame
- Hugh MacIsaac, Professor and DFO Invasive Species Research Chair, Director, Canadian Aquatic Invasive Species Network, Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, University of Windsor
- Jennifer Nalbone, Director, Navigation and Invasive Species, Great Lakes United, Buffalo
- Tys Theysmeyer, Head of Conservation and Natural Lands, Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington

- March 19, 2010: Fixing Randle Reef - Hamilton Port Authority 'willing, consistent'
Today an article appears in the Hamilton Spectator providing clarification in regards to a previous article submitted to the spectator:
The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) has been involved with Randle Reef for many years, and as such feels it is important to clarify information on the subject.
Environmental remediation is a key pillar of the port's strategic plan.
While there are different philosophies as to the most effective way of dealing with the contamination at Randle Reef, the fact remains that a Project Advisory Group led by Environment Canada reached consensus on the preferred "confine and cap" solution in 2002.
This method will address 99 per cent of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) mass at the site. The major stakeholders -- Environment Canada, Ministry of the Environment Ontario, City of Hamilton and the HPA -- are nearing completion of a detailed Environmental Assessment (Comprehensive Study Report) which also includes provisions for further public consultation. The report is expected later this spring.
Since 2002, the Hamilton Port Authority has shown leadership on Randle Reef:
* Took a lead role in the engineering design phase by providing more than $1 million of direct funding, along with project-management services, including the in-kind contribution of more than 2,000 hours of staff time.
* Has committed an additional $6 million of funding to the construction phase of the engineered containment facility.
* Will be providing two acres of commercial port lands at Pier 15 to support construction.
* In addition to the lands which will be used for project access, materials and equipment staging and water treatment, the HPA will bear the cost and responsibility for security for the duration of construction which is expected to last between seven and 10 years.
Federal and provincial funds have provided the momentum to move this important project forward; however, funding continues to be a challenge at the local level. The Hamilton Port Authority's $7-million investment is the largest single community contribution to date.
The City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Port Authority are working on seeking additional funding from sources across the region.
HPA has been a willing and consistent proponent of the Randle Reef project since first getting involved in 2002. We are active at the discussion tables of the Bay Area Restoration Council, the Remedial Action Plan office and several other organizations. We, along with our other project partners, remain steadfastly committed to the Randle Reef Remediation Project.
Mel Hawkrigg is chair, Hamilton Port Authority; Bruce Wood is president and CEO, Hamilton Port Authority.

- July 21, 2010: Goods movement leader returns capacity to Hamilton
Logistics capacity in Hamilton has been bolstered with the return of operations at a strategic facility in the Eastport lands. The Hamilton Port Authority Pier 25 location is under lease to CareGo Innovative Solutions Inc. and will undergo significant investment to upgrade its capabilities. The facility, known as Plant 19 and operated by the company's Steelcare division, is a distribution centre originally designed for automated steel coil transfers.
Originally developed as a single purpose fully automated steel coil handling facility, CareGo has invested an additional $200,000 in hardware upgrades to the building in order to accommodate its Careport division's popular and rapidly growing container program. Both divisions will have operations in the Eastport Drive location.
"To see Steelcare remodel its operations at Plant 19 is a very positive sign of economic growth and strengthens the strategic relationship with one of our valued partners," said HPA President and CEO Bruce Wood. Offering easy access to rail, water, and road, Steelcare's full-service logistics capabilities include North America's only fully-automated, two-high coil, storage facility that boasts 80,000 sq. ft. and 4.3 million tons per year throughput capacity utilizing only one operator. "We look forward to reopening the facility and flowing products through the Port and helping to grow with the City of Hamilton" said CareGo President Demetrius Tsafaridis, parent company of Steelcare.
